Message from the Director
Summer
greetings from the team at the Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies!
The final
part of the spring semester saw several exciting research activities.
Fresh off the press! CMES has published its Yearbook–big thanks to CMES
Communication Officer Matilda Skoglöw for producing it. Enjoy the read!
CMES
hosted a topical seminar on the rise and fall of Hezbollah with Rola El
Husseini Dean. A public talk by journalist and author Göran Rosenberg titled Whither
Israel was organised together with the Lund Student Association of Foreign
Affairs (UPF). The semester concluded with a topical international symposium on
Imagining the Nation in Urban Space, as well as an insightful PhD viva
on agonism in Palestine and Israel. Warm congratulations to Dr Anne Lene Stein!
A well-deserved summer vacation is now approaching.
CMES
continues to expand in terms of both research and staff. We look forward to
welcoming two new PhD students in the autumn: Khaoula Elomrani in Islamic
Studies, and Dina Tawfik in Political Science. Additionally, Associate
Professor Dalia Abdelhady from the Department of Sociology will join CMES for a
writing retreat this autumn. A new communication officer, Linus Edlund, will also be starting up
after the summer, replacing Matilda Skoglöw who has new exciting job
opportunities closer to home.
We are also hopeful the tenure-track position in
Middle Eastern History will soon be filled. The call attracted a large number
of highly qualified international candidates, which is both exciting and
promising. Furthermore, a new three-year project within the Strategic Research
Area (SRA) on the Middle East (MECW) is set to begin. This project will examine
water in fragile terrains, using satellite data to explore environmental
changes under conditions of conflict and governance stress.
Please also
note that CMES has a call out for research initiation, with a deadline of 18
August.
The Middle
East continues to face significant challenges, including the dramatic
escalation of violence between Iran and Israel and the worsening humanitarian
catastrophe in the Gaza Strip. These pressing issues will be addressed in the
next two issues of CMES Regional Outlook. Stay updated via our website,
